Empowering women and generating income with alternative sustainable livelihoods
Community group programs such as using recyclable materials to create bags and other products, are great for alternative sustainable livelihoods. These programs can empower women groups as well as being an alternative way of generating income which may alleviate pressures on natural resources. Women learn how to make products out of recycled materials, including food products. A community recycling program is started and the women collect the materials. There will be 1-2 sewing machines and the women will take turns using these to make bags and other products. These products can then be sold at a local market or at shops in the bigger cities. This program works to provide women with a means of income generation and contribute to the family's earnings, while still being able to work from home.
